Studio Policies

Piano lessons are a connection between the parent, the child and the teacher.
In order to optimize learning, every member has an important role to play.

Parent Responsibilities

Take an active role in lessons by providing a home with a good-quality instrument, access to a computer, a metronome, and a quiet practice space that is respected by all members of the family.

Treat practicing like any other homework and expect it do be done each day.  Be prepared to sit with younger children until they become self-regulated practicers:
  • They take charge of his environment by getting rid of distractions, especially electronic devices.
  • They are able to manage their time and set goals.
  • They seek out resources such as books, videos, websites, and apps to gain a clearer understanding of the music they are practicing.
  • They are able to use different practice strategies in different situations.
  • They listen to and evaluate their own playing.
  • They are motivated intrinsically and believe they will be successful.
Read the assignment sheets and subscribe to my Facebook page for information about upcoming events, recitals, practice tips and other items of interest.

Build a music library by purchasing books to last a lifetime.  Photocopies are not permitted in the studio as they deprive the composer, the publisher and the distributor from earning a fair living.

Parents are welcome to quietly observe any of the private lessons, however, in order to respect the camaraderie of the small groups, they are kindly asked not to come to the group lessons.

Student Responsibilities

Arrive on time with a positive attitude and a desire to learn.  Wash your hands upon entry to the studio.

Establish and maintain a regular practice schedule.  Set daily goals.  Aim for results.  Don’t count minutes spent at the piano.

Keep a pencil at the piano for making notations on your music and the assignment sheet.  Phone, email or text me if you are unsure about any aspect of the assignment.

Return borrowed materials in good condition within a reasonable time period.

Teacher Responsibilities

Maintain musicianship skills, studio equipment, and teaching resources.
